On to today’s issue:

🔥 Angel Deals of the Week

Angel funding rounds announced in recent weeks, compiled from public sources or via direct announcement. These deals represent the elite few that survived an angel network’s vetting process. Note: I have not personally analyzed these companies and am sharing for informational purposes only.

Maguro Surgical | Magnetic kidney stone retrieval device

Participating Groups: Citrine Angels and Life Science Angels

Maguro Surgical is developing the MagStone System, a device that coats kidney stone fragments with a magnetic polymer to help surgeons remove them more completely during endoscopic procedures, which are performed through the body's natural openings. The company says this reduces the number of passes needed and lowers procedure trauma. According to Maguro, the device has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, which speeds regulatory review. The company is completing preclinical testing and was recently welcomed to Citrine Angels' portfolio.

PawPay | Point-of-care pet insurance payment platform

PawPay is developing a payment platform that lets insured pet owners pay only their deductible and coinsurance (their share of the bill) at checkout, instead of paying the full invoice upfront and waiting weeks for reimbursement. The company verifies coverage, pays the veterinary clinic in full, and collects reimbursement from the insurer directly. PawPay says its platform is patent-pending and is currently onboarding veterinary practices while expanding insurance carrier integrations. VANE members provided the investment; deal terms were not disclosed.

Skyline Instruments | Precision timing for GPS-denied environments

Participating Group: Charlottesville Angel Network

Skyline Instruments is developing precision timing and synchronized sensing systems for defense, aerospace and related sectors operating where GPS signals are weak, blocked, or unavailable. The technology syncs multiple devices to the same clock. The company applies techniques adapted from radio astronomy research to applications including counter-drone defense, electronic warfare and signals intelligence. Skyline joins the Charlottesville Angel Network portfolio and recently received a separate strategic investment from The LGL Group, a NYSE-listed holding company, to support its growth.

🥇 The Nugget: My Top Takeaway from A Conversation with Hall Martin

Deal flow is more democratized than ever, and the value of investor communities is shifting. 🌊

Hall has seen the angel investing universe evolve through what he describes as four distinct eras, and the current one is forcing investor communities to evolve or die:

  1. 1990s: Sponsor-funded

  2. 2000s: Membership dues

  3. 2010s: Syndicates

  4. 2020s: Everything online / hybrid

It used to be incredibly difficult to get access to deal flow, and that was one of the primary values that an investor group membership offered. While that value proposition certainly remains for the modern investor group, it’s far less compelling simply because deal flow is pretty much everywhere. Crowdfunding. Online syndicates. Startup communities galore. A few clicks and any accredited investor can access a deluge of deals.

From Hall: “I knew guys that hung out at the law firm offices to see what fell off their desk, to see if they could find a deal to invest in. It was that hard.”

Now?

“Every tenth message is a deal and every fifth email is a deal… Deal flow is everywhere.”

The investor community value proposition, therefore, is evolving towards one that focuses on curation/quality of deal flow, expertise, community, and other supporting elements. In fact, I recently published primary analysis via the Angel Capital Association illustrating that the #1 value driver for angel network membership was community and social experience, NOT deal flow.

From Hall: Now what's rare is the really good deal.

Takeaway: If the value proposition for an investor community is ONLY “get access to deal flow," it’s outdated. Groups need to lean on things like quality deal flow, shared expertise/intelligence (particularly when this expertise is sector/niche focused), community, and more to really create value for members.
