🥇 The Nugget: My Top Takeaway from A Conversation with Dan Sinawat
Vertical AI is the way ↕️
I’ve noticed some investors get twisted up when they realize: “This startup is just an ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini wrapper.”
Maybe it is. Many “AI startups” provide very little incremental value beyond what foundational models bring. For example, a ChatGPT wrapper pointed at the real estate industry is technically "vertical AI." It's also nearly worthless.
In contrast, high value vertical AI is when a founder's domain expertise is transformed into a unique application of foundational AI technology - proprietary workflows, deep integrations, and industry-specific knowledge that an outsider can’t replicate by simply spinning up an API call and vibe coding a frontend over the weekend.
From Dan: "I wouldn't invest in a company that does AI for real estate if that founder doesn't have any real estate experience. How can they talk the same language? How could they even understand the real problem that the real estate industry has?”
Takeaway: When evaluating an AI strategy, ask: “What does this founder deeply understand that can't be Googled, copied, or vibe-coded?”
